What To Know About Citizenship And Naturalization

Citizenship is the status of being a citizen of a particular country. It affords you certain rights, privileges and responsibilities. Naturalization, on the other hand, is the legal process through which a noncitizen can become a citizen of that country. While both concepts involve belonging to a nation, naturalization is the bridge that allows one to cross from being a permanent resident to a full-fledged citizen.

The path to U.S. citizenship requires:

  1. Being a Green Card holder for a minimum of five years (or three years if married to a U.S. citizen)
  2. Residing continuously in the U.S. as a Green Card holder for a minimum of five years before applying
  3. Residing in the U.S. physically for at least 30 months out of those five years
  4. Living for at least three months in the state or in the district where you petition
  5. Reading, writing and speaking basic English
  6. Having knowledge of U.S. history and government
  7. Demonstrating that you have good character
  8. Taking an oath of allegiance to the U.S.

Our Atlanta immigration attorneys’ passion for uniting families and helping clients live the American Dream is the heart of our practice. We know each case is unique, and we’re ready to provide the care and dedication that you deserve. Even if you are not yet at the stage where you can petition for naturalization, we can help you with a range of other immigration issues, from family immigration to removal defense.
